Scarlett, Gunnar, and Why I’m Addicted to Nashville

For those of you not watching ABC’s Nashville, you’re missing out.  Nashville is a country soap opera made for those in need of some guilty pleasure TV.  During its recent hiatus, I found myself surprised at how much I missed the show.  It returns tonight at 10 pm and I have been counting down the minutes.  Here are a few reasons why I’m so addicted, and you should be too.

1.  Gunnar and Scarlett

Speaking of chemistry, these two sizzle on-screen.  Actors Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen kicked off the series and introduced their characters with a sultry rendition of The Civil Wars “If I Didn’t Know Better” (below) and we have been rooting for their hook-up ever since.  Before the hiatus, it finally happened but not without entering a murky gray area first.  Will the love last?  Or is it bound for heartbreak?  I’m betting on the latter.

Either way, we’ll get some great music out of it. The duets by these characters are beautiful and I find myself listening to them on repeat, keep them coming!

2. Connie Britton, y’all

Connie Britton plays Rayna Jaymes, a 40-something country music singer.  Not only is she trying to keep her career afloat, but she’s also juggling her estranged husband Teddy and her not-so-distant ex Deacon, played by Eric Close and Charles Esten respectively.  For those of you who love FNL, imagine Tami Taylor but with double the sass.

PREACH!

3.  The plot

I know I called it a country soap earlier, but its not as predictable as you think its going to be.

For example, When we found out that Maddie (Rayna’s oldest daughter) was Deacon’s, not her husband Teddy’s I thought for sure they were going to drag it out for a few episodes and it would be the catalyst of their divorce.  NOPE!  We eventually find out that he already knows and when someone tried to throw it in his face, Teddy brushed it off like yesterday’s news.  Nicely done writers!

4.  The men

Enough said.

5.  The music

The music is actually really, really good and a lot of fun.  There’s a little bit for everyone.  If you’re interested in more of a folky sound, check out the Scarlett and Gunnar duets.  If you’re looking for something to accompany your whiskey while you drown your sorrows, listen to anything with Deacon.  And if you’re looking for a “I’m an independent woman, hear me roar” anthem check out “Wrong Song” with Rayna and Juliette or “One Works Better” with Scarlett.  There’s a playlist below and be sure to subscribe to Rock Paper Watch on Spotify!
